Jack of all trades…Master of None

Not to belittle myself with the caption above, but I have always loved that figure of speech, and felt that it fit my life. In all honesty,  I know I have great personal qualities and accomplishments, but in terms of a trade/profession, I feel like this explains a lot for me. My ultimate goal is to be the master of one trade that I love!

Interestingly, many languages have similar quotes with the same idea as this one. Here are some  funny ones (translated to English):
Syrian Arabic – “Who does several trades, is incapable of managing any”
Bulgarian – “A spice for every dish”
Cantonese – “Equipped with knives all over, yet none is sharp”
Czech – “Nine crafts, tenth is misery”
Dutch – “12 trades, 13 accidents”
Mexican Spanish – “You aim for everything, but you hit nothing”

What I like about my new trade, business brokering, is that it introduces me to many different businesses run by many different people. It’s always interesting to see other people working in their trades and to see how they approach, manage and care about them. There can be so little or so much passion involved. Being exposed to this helps give me perspective for my life and sets the stage for many little life lessons.

I would love to hear from everyone what the one trade is that they love and wish they could master!

Timing is Everything

If you don’t have to swing hard to hit a home run, then everything I’ve been doing until now has been wrong. Why work too hard when if you got the timing, it’ll go…Unless that only works for Yogi Berra in baseball.
Since I can remember, I believed the opposite…in hard work. I worked hard. I never gave up. I fell down and got up again. I epitomized all the motivational quotes. But what I recently learned is a lesson in timing. After striking out time and time again, the pattern became clear…I always swing too soon.
All of the decisions I made; all of the businesses I started; all of the stocks I invested in, they were all great calls – I know it, yet the the results I expected from my decisions didn’t materialize until far later when other factors out of my control fell into place;  I invested my time and money into building businesses before I gained the knowledge to run those businesses; and my stocks made the moves I wanted after it was too late. No shortage of examples.
I didn’t want to admit it but I am now. LUCK. TIMING. Story of my life. Embrace your truth – This is mine. I may work hard but it is always at the wrong time!
I have no choice but to move on and hope my actions sync up with the calendar! I’m confident in the promise of tomorrow, but tomorrow can’t come soon enough! That’s why, as always, I keep trying – because I won’t get my break unless I’m looking for it…And my newest quest is business brokering. After a successful sale only a few months into my new job with New York Business Brokerage (NYBB), I’m psyched to share my experiences on what I hope is my new schedule!
For those of you who don’t know, a business broker is like a real estate agent, but for your business. If you have a business that you want to sell, I can help you find a buyer and negotiate a deal for you. If you’re on the flip side and want to purchase a business, I can scope out an appropriate one for you and help you along the way to making it happen. My varied experience and qualifications makes this the perfect career for me, and as a people person, I am excelling so far.
Come along with me on my journey to learn a few pieces of wisdom, a few interesting facts and a little bit about business brokering and the world of commerce…and ultimately to find out if I ever catch my long-awaited-for break!
